I am Lena Nerland, a current student at MA Graphic Art at University of Hertfordshire, UK. My interest in graphic art started back in 2004 – when I was studying MA in Human Resource Management at Bournemouth University. As I always had an interest in innovative design (how things are shaped, materials and colours used) I often went to London and visited contemporary museums there. So did it happen that on one of my visits at the Tate Art museum I bought this book: «Graphic Design as a Second Language» by Bob Gill (1). That is now ten years ago and at the time of purchase I just hadn’t designed anything myself yet. It was not even in my thoughts… I just found it very attracting and interesting reading. I had no idea that I less than 2 years later should be creating my first graphic design for my own business!(2) At the same time I started to decorate my home with my own series of abstract paintings. I always included a «hand-printed» text to be included in each of the series of paintings (3). Then when the artist inside of me was given some kind of nurture, I became confident to follow another dream I had; to release my own music! Again, I did all the art work required (such as posters and album covers etc)(4) – I just loved to do the graphic art work! So beside being a musician I was earning money on making design for other companies and artists (5). Eventually when our music became more arty I started to experiment with my paintings: I scanned/made photographs of them and used various computer based programs to turn them into something new and exciting that I could project on a screen to go along with the new music I created/performed. It has now came to a point were I want to give my graphic design work first priority! Although my «journey» in Graphic Design started 10 years ago, I feel I have a lot to learn –  and my aim is to merge the elements of my previous experience with all the new knowledge I acquire by studying for my MA in Graphic Design! I hope you become inspired by visiting my blog.
